Re-training Your Brain

Progress 21 September 2009 | 8 Comments

I'm tired today. I don't know why, I slept plenty over the weekend and slept well last night. Again I was nodding off on the way to work, which is all kinds of bad. Why is it when you are tired and feel your worst all you want is the kinds of foods that will just increase the bad feelings? Why can't feeling tired and crappy make me crave protein or just water?

For those of you out there that are more in your right/healthy mind than I am at this point how did you get to where you are? Was it about forcing yourself to make positive choices even when you craved the negative ones and eventually the positive choices were the norm?

On the good note my husband and I went for a longer bike ride this weekend. It was such an amazing day on Sunday we just had to really enjoy it. We rode our bikes out to the lake, to the part of the lake where normally we don't get to because you can't park your car there and it's a far enough walk.

We sat down by the water and had a small lunch, there will be more pictures uploaded over the week. On the way back I felt like all my energy was gone, I didn't think I could make the last leg. I did it anyway =)

Could it be the new inhaler making you sleepy? You’ve also been doing an awful lot. Even though exercise, like bike riding, is supposed to increase your energy, maybe it takes a little while, especially if you aren’t used to the exercise.

When I was playing a lot of hockey, working out a TON, and eating right, my healthy, high-fiber diet did become the norm. It took a long time and a lot of hard work, though. But I also had a medical condition I had to fight and the way to do it was through my diet.

The bike ride and picnic sounds fun. I love the pictures! And you made it back. :-)

I love bike rides! Unfortunately we moved out to a really shady areas, so I only bike ride when I fly home. So glad that you and your husband got to do that together.

As for making positive and healthy choices, well, I have a group of foods that I turn to that I know will always satisfy those bad cravings that are low in calories and or high in fiber. I have tons of veggies stocked up, but I also have 60 calorie pudding snacks and fat free cool whip or popcorn in stock. They are my go to snacks when I want that chocolate cake :)

    happy monday!

  3. For me, the retraining my brain took time. It certainly didn’t come overnight. There were times when my mind and heart were in a disconnect from each other. Over time, each good choice I made was one more step towards making a permanent change. It was almost like putting money in the bank. The more I had, the less I wanted to drain the bank.

You can do this. It is not easy, but you are worth it!!

@Diane, Fit to the Finish, come to think of it, i’ve already retrained my brain a lot from 10 years ago, and 5 years ago and 6 months ago. i guess i am making progress.

Mine has been a long process. I also tend to slip back into old habits but never as bad as i originally was. I started learning about healthy minded stuff back in college 9 years back. I started by following the basic guidelines of Body For Life. I started eating vegetables, switched all my white foods with whole grain or brown rice. Switched to low-fat or healthy fat. That alone made the world of difference.

I always make the most progress with competition or with a team mate. I went off sugar for 3 months. Before that i would have up to 4 candy bar like treat each weekend. After 3 months i couldn’t eat 1 candy bar with out getting sick to my stomach. It’s a huge eye opener to how bad those things really are for you. I still have one now and then…but only as long as it doesn’t make me sick.

Good luck! Oh, and actually throwing out the junk…makes you think before buying it again. When it’s really junk it’s not waist and not nice to share it with others…here you get fat I’m trying to be healthy =) LOL!

@Krystal, i’m actually eating a plain yogurt with granola but i know the yogurt is sweet so i wonder how much sugar is in it and the granola is sweet. now i’m like, this isn’t quite as healthy as i planned…
