Sugar Overload

Why is there so much sugar in everything?? Is it so wrong to want some lowfat, high fiber and minimal sugar snacks? Why is it that when they make a product that is low in fat and high in fiber they seem to up the sugar.

I love Fiber One bars, they are convenient and taste good but there could be so much less sugar. I'm trying really hard not to crave sugar so much but it's hard to find convenient sweet snacks that aren't loaded with it.

I checked out the isle of similar bars and I couldn't find a bar with less than 7 grams of sugar. Not one. I know a lot of times they put in a lot more fake sugar but why must everything be so sweet?

I feel the same about yogurt. I want a yogurt that is very low on sugar but with no fake sugar either. I've never been able to find it.

Seems to me I should probably make my own food from scratch, which seems like a lot of time and money. With the life I have I tend to need convenient and cheap as often as I can.

Plus, I want to share another lesson I learned yesterday, one I've learned before and never can seem to remember when it counts. Here is my tweat:

I haven't slept well the past couple nights, I don't know why but because of the lack of sleep I am waking up late and not making the best choices. Whenever I'm dead tired in the morning and in a rush I tend to get myself a vanilla latte at Starbucks, it's not the healthiest or the cheapest option.

Everyday I say I'm going to get up at 5:30 so I'll have time to do everything I need to do but then I end up getting up at 6:00 instead, getting stuck in the later traffic and being late for work. Welcome to The Reasons Why Robin Can't Get Her Shit Together.

  1. Sugar is hidden in so many foods isn’t it? I have to admit that I’m not as conscious of it as I should be. I agree with the bars and yogurt though. They really could have less sugar. Maybe they put so much in because we as consumers have such a craving for it?

It’s hard to get up early in the morning, especially if you aren’t sleeping well the night before!

@Diane, Fit to the Finish, I think when they take out stuff from food (like fat) they feel the need to overcompensate with sugar and carbs.

  2. Hubby and I were just talking about sugar cravings last night. Mine aren’t as bad as they were but still get pretty crazy latter in the day when i get fatigued. He tried a hard candy the other day and said it worked wonders. I usually have a headache coming on because i didn’t eat or drink enough in the busy afternoon. I take a Tylenol a tall glass of water and eat a high protein healthy meal if I’m still hungry. Rather refill up on that then addictive headache causing sugar. Oh fruit helps hit the spot with out the glucose spike. Something about the body and fructose. Anywho. Good luck with the sleeping I’m starting to get back on track my PMS threw it way off.

@Fitness Surfer, I’m definitely getting better, sometimes I think I need to avoid it like the plague because just a taste seems to throw me into a tailspin.

Bars are just candy, no matter how much fiber they have.

If you want to avoid sugar, whole food is the way to go.

@Hanlie, yes but they are convenient, convenient helps a lot in my life. i am broadening my horizons though.

I was cursed with a sweet tooth. When I was doing well strictly on that high-fiber diet, the only sweets I ate, aside from Clif Bars, were fruit. I like fruit, but I like candy and cake and brownies better.

Anyway, I used to eat plain yogurt and mix in fresh fruit. It isn’t nearly as good as fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt, but it’s better for you because it isn’t pre-sweetened. However, it’s cheap and it’s easy.

@Barb, i’m picky about fruit too, if it has a dent or a bruise i have issues with it. lame, i know.

Sugar is hidden in SO many foods – eating healthy is difficult, but so worth it. Good for you for at least being aware that sugar is hidden in stuff…not everyone always realizes that, you know?

@Lainie, I do, it’s been something I’ve learned more and more about over time. I like to know things, I really try to avoid denial.
