Mistakes

Thinking 8 October 2009 | 12 Comments

I'm damn good at making mistakes. Hell, I could write a book on it. My first chapter could be about how to constantly either lose or break your glasses as a child. The second chapter could be about what to avoid at all costs when puberty hits.

I'd also like to believe I'm good at learning from my mistakes, except when it comes to food and exercise. When it comes to food I know that a. sugar makes me feel worse, every single time b. I have no concept of portion control when it comes to cereal and pasta and c. I can't say no to bagels and cream cheese.

Knowing this, there are aways to not let these things take over my life. I try to have snacks that are not full of sugar when I'm craving it. I try to keep cereal out of the house and when I make wheat pasta I make a smaller amount of it. If I decide to have a bagel I try to either scoop the bagel or have only 1/2, which doesn't always work.

So I guess I have learned from my mistakes, it's just a matter of putting that information into use when I really need it. I have the tools, I just need to not ignore them when the time comes. I guess it's really about listening to yourself and knowing that you really do know what is best for you.

  1. One thing I really noticed about your post today is how you are really thinking about your choices. And yes, sometimes we make ones we regret, but starting to analyze them is a great way to start keeping those mistakes from occuring over and over again.

I wish I could tell you how many mistakes I made on my weight loss journey. Thousands.

The wonderful thing about our life is that we make mistakes, yes; but we can also correct them. Keep thinking and analyzing, you are doing great!

Even if you don’t put what you’ve learned to use, at least you do learn from your mistakes. Lots of people don’t even get that far.

  3. I think Diane hit the nail on the head. The fact that you are analyzing it shows that the mistakes are sinking in, and you will be less likely to make them again.

  4. have you ever tried the mini bagels – might be a good way to control portion size but still indulge a bit…. and grab whole wheat ones, smother in almond butter a little honey – healthy and yummy :)

@my kashi diet, i have and can you believe that sometimes when i’m in that carb craving place i’ll eat like 2 at once? that’s probably somehow still better than a dunkin donuts bagel.

It’s all trial and error right? Or…in my case trial and crash and burn, and why did i try that? What was i thinking? LOL! I seriously laughed when i read your quote. Why not just willingly make a mistake. The good thing is at least you know your doing it rather than not even noticing that 5th Oreo popping in your mouth. I had no idea that 4 Oreos is 280 calories. Wow! The hubby told me as i went to reach for a 6th. That takes me over 30min on the bike to burn. So…not worth it…unless i know what I’m doing and actually enjoy every single one =) Why not. I figure it’s better than ignorance.

@Krystal, being aware is definitely one of the first steps.

This post is dead on. I made the “mistake” last week of taking leftover rice (WHITE RICE) to work for lunch the next day…Yeah, I ended up with almost 1900 calories for the day. (My target is around 1400)….so I learned real quick I can’t do that. I just…can’t. Thanks for the thought provoking post!
