My Healthy Side

I have a naturally healthy side despite my obsession with breads, cereals and sugar. No really, I swear.

I love vegetables, I always have. My mother never had to force me to eat my broccoli or carrots, I love them just as they are. No need for butter or cheese, just a pinch of salt. I learned as an adult I also love spinach and brussel sprouts, who knew? I'm generally too lazy to make them but I should make them more often. We try to keep lots of frozen vegetables in our freezer. My mother did however have to nag me to eat meatloaf. Yuck.

I rarely eat fast food. If I do it's usually a bagel w/cream cheese at Dunkin Donuts or it's a hamburger at Wendys. I've never been a very big fan of fast food and have avoided it for a big portion of my life. I generally hate McDonalds, Big Size Me kind of solidified my feelings. I have only eaten at Taco Bell twice in my life and I don't like it, that's not Mexican food.

I only have a soda like once a month if that, most of the time I forget about it. I decided one day to stop drinking it and it just kind of fell off my radar. I am not a fan of diet soda so it's generally no soda for me. Sometimes I like to mix a little orange juice with seltzer for some fun but not very often.

I've never used cream in my coffee, only ever milk. I used to only use skim milk until I met my husband who was used to whole milk so we compromised and now have 2%.

  1. That’s wonderful that you really don’t have a taste for those foods that so many people struggle with! I used to be obsessed with fast food and ate it 5 or 6 times a week.

Now I can count on one hand the times I’ve had fast food in the last 5 years!

    Take care,
    Diane

BTW – I love your accidental beauty site. I became a facebook fan!

@Diane Fit to the Finish, breaking free of an addiction like that is a beautiful thing, I’ve pulled away from many over the years.

Like Diane, I was obsessed with fast food. Before I started this 3 weeks ago, I had Burger King or MCD every day for lunch. and sometimes for dinner too. Not kidding. And pepsi? I don’t even wanna tell you how much of that I drank on a daily basis! LOL We all have different struggles, don’t we? I like veggies too – always have. Really it was only out of sheer laziness why I didn’t eat more of them. I’m the same way with fruit….I love it, but hate having to clean, chop, store the stuff….grabbing a bag of chips was always easier. I’m slowly learning though that even though it’s easier in the moment, the long term effects are astounding.

@Josie, it’s frightening how much all of us in the same position have in common. i may not love McDonalds but I do love Dunkin Donuts and can’t seem to turn away from a bagel. I also have an obsession with sugar, especially pastries. We’re learning slowly.

I’m the exact opposite — I even worked at McD’s, but that was senior year of high school. The only fast food places I’ll go to now are Wendy’s for the chili, Taco Bell even though it isn’t real Mexican food, and KFC. Even then, the most I’ll go is every couple of weeks, which for me, is improvement. Oh, OK and a few of the local hot dog joints.

It’s only in recent years (like the last 5) that I’ve grown to love vegetables and actually eat salads. I always hated veggies as a kid. I don’t know how it happened, but I now love tomatoes! It’s weird.

I’ve always been a soda freak, but have cut it out of my diet — again — recently. I may have one once in a blue moon, but I now know that I can live without it.
